Mrs Ghamari Sabzevari Nasibeh will present her P.H.D thesis on "The Effect of Highways Construction on Socio-spatial Segregation of Urban Neighborhoods " in Iran at 17:00 P.M on Feb 28th 2017.
Abstract:
Evaluation of urban space development process shows that different neighborhoods in cities have been formed based on ethnic, religious and trade ::union:: characteristics and have slow and organized growth. Implementation of development programme such as construction of highways and arterial roads without consideration of social consequences has led to spatial (physical) separation of urban neighborhoods. Then, this spatial (physical) separation lead to socio-spatial segregation of neighborhoods. The objective of this research is evaluation of highways effects on the socio-spatial segregation of their adjacent neighborhoods. Mixed research method and general and deep questioning practices, reviewing and documentary researches, observation to collect data and set the information have been used in this research. In addition, software applications such as SPSS, MATLAB, ArcGIS, Geo Segregation Analyzer and GeoDa have been used to analyze the data. The effectiveness of Imam Ali highway on 1st District (which includes Ozgol and Araj neighborhoods) and 8th District (which includes Kerman and Fadak neighborhoods) of Tehran has been evaluated as the case studies. The segregation indicators have been classified and developed at the beginning of this research based on different theories and concluded studies. The additions which are the share of researchers in promotion of urban planning knowledge are ethnicity, job characteristics, education level, quality and quantity of housing situation, income, cost of land, the residence consent and residence duration, desire to live in the neighborhood and access to important land use which were discussed beyond mentioned theories. It should be noted that various indicators have been invented for measurement of socio-spatial segregation but none of these indicators have been used for evaluation of effectiveness of an external factor on level of socio-spatial segregation. The effect of highway on the socio-spatial segregation of its adjacent neighborhoods based on the distance of blocks to highway has been evaluated in this research for the first time. It can be stated based on the findings in this research that Imam Ali Highway has caused segregation in Kerman and Fadak neighborhoods but the effect of this highway on the segregation of Ozgol and Araj neighborhoods is lower than Kerman and Fadak neighborhoods. This finding is due to the fact that socio-spatial segregation between Ozgol and Araj neighborhoods existed before the construction of highway and construction of highway has had a little effect on the segregation. Thus, it can be concluded that construction of highways affect the socio-spatial segregation of their adjacent neighborhoods but level of this effectiveness depends on characteristics of the highway and the adjacent neighborhoods.
